The American Farm School is a private, non-profit educational institution that traditionally prepares leaders in agriculture, food systems, natural resources and life sciences. One of the more recent initiatives of the School is to make the environment and sustainability the main focus in pre-school and elementary education offering for the first time innovative educational programs to young children 2,5 to 12 years of age. The sciences constitute  an important part of the curriculum. The basic language of instruction in the Primary School is Greek with emphasis given to English language fluency. All students acquire graduated skills in information technology through a variety of software and programs with the goal of establishing their confidence in technology use and to support classroom and outdoor learning. 

 

 

Job mission: 

The Elementary Head Teacher reports to the Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs of AFS and is responsible for the development, management and evaluation of the elementary school program and curriculum. He or she is the main Grade 1 teacher during the first year of the School’s program.

 

Job description:

The Elementary Head Teacher is charged with the following responsibilities:

• Develops the curriculum of Grades 1-3 and oversees and evaluates its implementation.

• Teaches one class using modern teaching methods giving emphasis to experiential learning, environmental and sciences education and the development of students’ IT skills

• Communicates with parents providing timely feedback.

• Supports students and parents with alternative strategies and provides additional assistance with daily assignments and projects.

• Develops and coordinates the afternoon program activities and projects. 

• Plans regional field trips which are integrated into the curriculum.

• Participates in student recruiting activities and other activities that require teacher presentation.

• Is responsible for all administrative work and official reporting (student records, school mail, communication with the Department of Education etc.)

• Assigns, plans and oversees the other teaching and supporting staff.

• Attends community activities addressed to student families.

• Manages the program’s resources.

 

Necessary qualifications:

• Highly qualified and certified to teach Elementary School in Greece 

• A minimum of 5 year teaching experience in elementary education

• Demonstrated commitment/education to the environment and life sciences  

• Proficiency in English 

• Excellent IT skills

 

Additional skills:

• Current teaching methods with focus in experiential learning and environmental education 

• Elementary education curriculum development experience

• Ability to develop collaborations with U.S. institutions 

• Experience in elementary education administration 

• Ability to recruit, guide and develop a team of highly motivated teaching staff

• Efficient management of the program’s resources 

• Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills

• Commitment to excellence and educational innovation

• Impeccable work ethics
